Kava Kave Extract side effects

Any discussion of the medicinal use of Kava Kava Root Powder must include a discussion of safety. Although traditional use of Kava Kava Root Powder has not been associated with liver problems, there have been reports of some rare incidents of Kava extract causing liver damage, liver failure and death. Notably, these events were rare and much less common than liver toxicity caused by some commonly used standard medicines, including bacteriostats, antisepsis drugs, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

KAVA EXTRACT (2)

The World Health Organization reviewed data on hepatotoxicity case reports in 2008. Only 8 of the 93 cases were considered presumably due to kava ingestion; the other 53 cases were probable, including confounding factors. In reviewing these cases, it was found that drinking alcohol and taking kava at the same time may be factors that predispose to liver damage. People taking kava are advised not to consume alcohol at the same time.

The preparations that appear to be causing problems are also produced in different ways than the substances traditionally used, and using varieties that are not normally intended for human consumption. Traditionally a variety of kava called "noble" is used, the root of which is macerated in cold water.
